Apple System Software and Updates

System Software

The most recent MacOS software available is System 7.6. If you do not wish to pay for the latest version of the software, you can still run earlier versions of System 7.5 and even System 7.1.

If you are using System 7.5, you should be running System 7.5.5. You can check to see what software you have by going to your Apple Menu and selecting "About this Macintosh."

If you are running an earlier version of 7.5 (.1, .2 or .3) you should upgrade to 7.5.5. NOTE: if you're running 7.5, 7.5.1, or 7.5.2, you must first upgrade to 7.5.3, then upgrade to 7.5.5. These were incremental upgrades, so they must be done in order.

Download System 7.5.3 Updater - This file is 20+ megabytes and will take over 2 hours to download.

Download System 7.5.5 Updater - This file is 4+ megabytes and will take over 30 minutes to download.

If you are using Open Transport (TCP/IP), you should be using version 1.1.2. Note: System 7.6 comes with 1.1.1 installed, so System 7.6 users will want to upgrade as well.

Download Open Transport 1.1.2 - This file is about 10 megabytes and will take about an hour to download.

If you are running MacTCP, the latest version is 2.0.6.

Download MacTCP 2.0.6 Updater - this file is 132 kilobytes and should download in just a few minutes.

If you are having problems with either FreePPP or ConfigPPP, you might want to consider Open Transport/PPP 1.0

Download OT/PPP 1.0 - this file is about 2.2 megabytes and will take 15 minutes or so to download.

Internet Software for Macintosh

Web Browser Software

Note: both Netscape and Internet Explorer have the ability to send and receive mail.

Download CyberDog 1.1 - Macintosh-only web browser, mail client, and more!

Download Netscape Navigator - we recommend using version 3.0.1 and below. The new "Communicator" (4.0b) package is still very buggy.

Download Microsoft's Internet Explorer - We recommend using IE 4.5 with Outlook Express 4.5 for Macintosh.

Mail Programs

Note: both Netscape and Internet Explorer have the ability to send and receive mail.

Download Eudora Lite - Freeware version of the most popular Internet Mail program.

Download Eudora Pro - Free 30 day demo of the full version.

News Readers

Note: both Netscape and Internet Explorer have the ability to send and receive news articles.

Newswatcher

Popular Download Sites

HyperArchive Root - Searchable index of all the latest shareware and freeware written for the Macintosh.

Apple Computer Mirror Site - includes links to all major download sites, including Apple sites for system software updates.

Helper Applications for Netscape - get the most out of the World Wide Web with these browser add ons.
